SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Internet Explorer 4.x to 5.0 or 5.01, the Local intranet zone is set to the Medium security level on the Security tab in Internet Options, but the actual settings for the zone are a mix of Medium and Medium-low settings.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Local intranet zone is set to Medium security in Internet Explorer 4.x. Internet Explorer 5 introduced new security settings (for example, Access data sources across domains) and a new recommended level (Medium-low) for the Local intranet zone. Your existing security settings are maintained and the Local intranet zone is still set to the Medium security level, but new settings (Access data sources across domains) are set to Medium-low (Prompt) instead of Medium (Disable).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, reset the Local intranet zone to the default level (Medium-low):
  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. On the Security tab, click the Local intranet zone and then click Default Level.
  3. Click Apply or OK.
NOTE: After you do this, you will be using the new security template in Internet Explorer 5.0, and you must re-establish any customizations you have made to your Local intranet security settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
