Trust Does Not Work Between Windows 2000 and MIT Kerberos (266082)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q266082

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a trust between Windows 2000 and a MIT Kerberos realm, and you have disabled NetBIOS over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), the trust does not work and you may receive the following error message:
The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting see windows help.

The Trust cannot be created.
If you have not disabled NetBIOS and you set up a trust with a MIT Kerberos realm, you may receive the following error message:
The domain cannot be contacted. If this is a Windows domain, the trust cannot be set up until the domain is contacted.

Click Cancel and try again later. If this is an interoperable non-Windows Kerberos realm and you want to set up this side of the trust, click OK.

CAUSE

The snap-in is running a different error code than the one that is returned when you disable NetBIOS.
