SYMPTOMS

When you install the Philips 665 Vesta USB camera by using the Philips driver version 1.1 CD-ROM, the Philips Setup program prompts you for the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM. If you do not have the Windows 98 CD-ROM, the installation program does not allow you to continue.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Philips Setup program looks for the Win98_23.cab file. The Philips Setup program does not pull any drivers from the .cab file at this point, it only verifies that the .cab file is present.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior:
  1. Right-click a blank area of your desktop, point to New, and then click Folder.
  2. Type win98_23.cab as the folder name, and then press ENTER.
  3. Run the Philips camera Setup program. When Setup asks for your installation location, point to the empty Win98_23.cab folder you created, and then continue with Setup. Setup displays the following message:

Now you can plug in your Philips Vesta Fun Camera

For example, you would typically refer to the c:\Windows\Desktop\Win98_23.cab folder.
  4. Plug in the camera. You are prompted for the location of the Kstvtune.a-- file. Point the Setup program to the location of your Windows Me CD-ROM, or if you copied a flat folder of the Windows Me Setup files to your hard disk, point Setup to the .cab files on your hard disk.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the Setup process. Philips Setup proceeds with the camera installation, and copies the Windows Me files. Windows Me System File Protection (SFP) updates several copies of the files installed by the Philips software to the Windows Me version of these files (for example, Usbaudio.sys, Vfwwdm32.dll, Vfwwdm.drv and Kswdmcap.ax). The installation completes successfully and the camera works properly.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have a Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM available, you can insert it into the CD-ROM drive and point Setup to either the Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition compact disc to continue.

If you do not have either the Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM (or a flat folder of the Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition .cab files copied to your hard disk), you need to follow the steps in the preceding section.
