This article describes how to use the sample Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) images that are included in Windows Millennium Edition (Me) as desktop backgrounds without turning on Active Desktop.

The sample pictures included in the My Pictures folder are JPEG or .jpg files, which require Active Desktop to be displayed as a background.

Active Desktop requires more video memory to display .jpg images than the default Windows background functionality. The following steps help in cases where the installed display adapter does not have an excess of available video RAM.

To use a sample .jpg file as a desktop background:
  1. Click Start, point to Documents, and then click My Pictures.
  2. Right-click a sample image, and then click Open With.
  3. Click Paint, and then click OK.
  4. On the File menu, click Save As.
  5. In the Save As Type box, click one of the bitmap (.bmp) options, type a name for the file, and then click OK.
  6. Close the window.
  7. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
  8. On the Background tab, click the sample image that you saved as a .bmp file, and then click OK.
