Behavior changes in Microsoft Network Services (265861)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q265861

SYMPTOMS

A NetBIOS server program may bind to and listen on the Microsoft network adapter LANA in addition to the Microsoft Server service. Under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you can configure a NetBIOS client to obtain access to an additional NetBIOS server program by using a net command such as net use * \\myserver\share (note that this command is usually used to obtain access to previous programs). However, when you use a net command on your Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

The "net use" command

System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found.

The "net view" command

System error 52 has occurred. A duplicate name exists on the network.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the net command is not designed to be used with other NetBIOS server programs under Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0, even though this is possible under Windows NT 4.0. Extensive design changes in Windows 2000 network services have affected this behavior, causing the net command not to work as expected under Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Use a NetBIOS client program to obtain access to a NetBIOS server program instead of using the net command.

Method 2

Stop the Server service.

Note This method has other implications (such as disabling other computers from establishing connections to the computer) while the service is stopped.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
