SYMPTOMS

Using Intel's Create and Share version 3.0 software and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, you can install Intel's PC Camera Pro Web camera.

After you upgrade your system to Microsoft Windows Millennium (Me), the Intel PC Camera Pro Web camera continues to work properly as it did with Windows 98 Second Edition. However, when you double-click the icon for the camera that appears under My Computer or on the icon in the Scanners and Cameras folder (in Control Panel), you receive the following error message:
The imaging device failed to initialize. Make sure it is properly connected, and then refresh the folder.
When you right-click the icon under My Computer or the icon in the Scanners and Cameras folder (in Control Panel), and then select Properties, you receive the following error message:
The properties for this item are not available.

RESOLUTION

You must remove and redetect the camera from the Device Manager; to do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Click the plus (+) sign next to Imaging Devices to display a list of imaging devices installed on the computer.
  5. Select Intel PC Camera Pro and click the Remove button.

The device is removed from the system.
  6. After the camera is removed from the list, click Refresh. The operating system redetects the camera, and Intel PC Camera Pro is displayed in the list under Imaging Devices.
  7. Click Close.
  8. Under My Computer, double-click the Intel PC Camera Pro icon (or right-click the Intel PC Camera Pro icon in the Scanners and Cameras folder, click Use Wizard, and then click Explore Camera.) The camera initializes and works properly.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Millennium upgrades the device driver for the camera to the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) driver provided by Intel. WIA is a new architecture that permits imaging devices such as scanners and cameras to communicate with imaging applications such as Microsoft Picture It! 2000 or Kodak Imaging. For more details about WIA and a list of supported WIA devices, visit the following Web site: WIA drivers permit the device to appear both under My Computer and in the Scanners and Cameras folder located in Control Panel.
