Toshiba Tecra 780DVD Does Not Shut Down Correctly (265484)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to shut down a Toshiba Tecra 780DVD it may restart, or it may stop the shutdown process and you see a flashing cursor.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Lucent modem asks for a delay in a Ring0 function. In this event, the system will not respond or restart when shut down.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact Toshiba to get an updated driver, or follow the workaround steps located in the "More Information" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable the Lucent modem in Device Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
  2. In the System Properties window, click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Modems to expand the menu.
  4. Click the Lucent modem listing, and then click Properties.
  5. Click to select the Disable in this Hardware Profile check box.
  6. Click OK to close the Lucent modem Properties window.
  7. Click OK to close the System Properties window.
  8. Click Start, click Shut Down.
  9. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, OK, or press ENTER.
