The Help and Support Instructions for Reinstalling Internet Connection Sharing Are Incorrect (265327)

SYMPTOMS

The instructions in the Help and Support dialog box tell you to use the Internet Tools component in Add/Remove Programs to remove Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). These instructions are incorrect.

CAUSE

The Internet Tools component group does not exist in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me). ICS is located in the Communications component group on the Windows Setup tab in Add/Remove Programs.

WORKAROUND

To reinstall ICS, follow these steps:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  3. In the Components box, double-click Communications.
  4. Click to clear the Internet Connection Sharing check box, click OK, and then click OK.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted.
  6. Repeat steps one through four, but in step four, click to select the Internet Connection Sharing check box.
  7. Restart your computer when prompted.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

  1. In the Help and Support dialog box, click Troubleshooting, and then click Home Networking and network problems.

  3. Click To reinstall Internet Connection Sharing.
