Case 3

CAUSE

This functionality is by design in Microsoft Word and depends upon the view and options that you select.

MORE INFORMATION

This functionality is explained in the following:

Case 1

Web layout view is a view of a document as it appears in a Web browser. For example, the document appears as one long page (without page breaks), and text and tables wrap to fit in the window.

To switch to Web layout view, click Web Layout on the View menu. Or click the Web Layout View button on the horizontal scroll bar.

In Web layout view, Microsoft Word optimizes your Web page, so that you can see how it will look when you publish it to the Web or an intranet. In Web layout view, you can see backgrounds, AutoShapes, and other effects that are commonly used in Web documents or documents that you view on the screen.

Because a Web page is one long page that wraps to the size of your browser window, when you view a document in Web layout view, Word cannot assign and display a value for the Page, Sec, At, Ln, and Col items, and the Number/number item on the status bar is removed.

Case 2

This problem occurs when you view your document in normal or outline view, and either you turn off the background repagination option, or you turn on the Draft Font option.

Normal view displays text formatting and a simplified page layout. Normal view is convenient for most editing and formatting tasks. To switch to normal view, click Normal on the View menu.

Outline view shows the document's structure. The indentations and symbols in outline view do not affect the way your document looks in normal view, and the indentations and symbols are not printed. To switch to outline view, click Outline on the View menu.

The Draft Font option displays most character formatting as underlined and bold, and displays graphics as empty boxes. Select the Draft font check box to speed up the screen display of documents that have extensive formatting. To turn off the Draft Font option, click Options on the Tools menu. On the View tab, click to clear the Draft font check box, and then click OK.

The Background Repagination option allows Word to repaginate your document automatically as you work. This check box is unavailable in page layout view (on the View menu), because background repagination occurs by default in page layout view (you cannot turn it off). To turn on the Background Repagination option in normal or outline view, click Options on the Tools menu. On the General tab, click to select the Background repagination check box, and then click OK.

Case 3

Headers and footers are typically used in printed documents. You can create headers and footers that include text or graphics; for example, page numbers, the date, a company logo, the document title or file name, or the author's name. A header is printed in the top margin of the page; a footer is printed in the bottom margin.

When the insertion point is in the header or footer of a document, Word automatically makes the Ln item unavailable, and no value is displayed on the status bar.
