This article was previously published under Q265164 SYMPTOMS
When you move a subweb in a virtual directory to a new physical disk, you may receive the following error message when you attempt to open the subweb in Microsoft FrontPage 2000:
Cannot open a web at directory because it's an alias. Use the full URL instead.
RESOLUTION
To successfully move a subweb to a new physical disk, follow these steps:
- Create a directory on the new disk to hold the subwebs, for example, e:\subwebs.
- In this new directory, create new folders to correspond to the subwebs that you want to move. Use slightly different names; for example, change "Training" to "Trainingnew."
- Start Internet Information Service (IIS).
- In IIS, create virtual directories with slightly different names (for clarity, use the same name as the folders that you created in step 2), pointing to the folders from step 2; for example, create a virtual directory named Trainingnew, and make it point to drive:\subwebs\trainingnew:
- Right-click the Web site.
- Point to New, and then click Virtual Directory.
- Follow the instructions in the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard.
- Configure Server Extensions on the virtual directories:
- Right-click the virtual directory.
- Point to Task (or All Tasks).
- Click Configure Server Extensions.
- Switch to FrontPage 2000, click Publish Web on the File menu to publish the subwebs that you want to move, and then verify that the content has been moved to the new subweb.
- Delete the old subwebs: Right-click the subweb, and then click Delete on the shortcut menu.
- Switch to IIS.
- Rename the new subwebs as the old names (right-click the
virtual directory, and then click Rename).NOTE: The real folder name and the application name are changed when you do this.
