WD2000: General Protection Fault After Word Automatically Corrects Text (265007)

SYMPTOMS

When you type a lowercase i and Word automatically corrects it to an uppercase I, Word stops responding, and you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Winword caused a General Protection Fault in module Winword.exe.
-or-

Application Error: The instruction at '0x012010bb' referenced memory at '0x00000000'. The memory could not be 'read'.

CAUSE

This error message appears if there is no language associated with the text that was just corrected automatically. Although this problem is difficult to reproduce, the error message occurs most often in the following situations:
  • When you type over a form field

    -or-

  • When you unlink a form field or merge field by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F9

    -or-

  • When you type a lowercase i, followed by a space, as the first character of a document

    -or-

  • When you merge a form letter to a new document, and the text that replaces the merge field is not associated with a language

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Language and then click Set Language.
  3. In the Mark selected text as list, select a language, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.
