PPT2000: How to Use Earlier Versions of PowerPoint Templates with PowerPoint 2000 (264913)

When you upgrade to PowerPoint 2000 from PowerPoint 97, 95, or 4.0, and you do not remove the earlier version of PowerPoint before you upgrade, you automatically have access to the PowerPoint templates that were previously installed on your computer.

NOTE: You cannot download the PowerPoint 97 templates from OfficeUpdate unless you have PowerPoint 97 installed on your computer. These templates cannot be installed on a PowerPoint 2000 computer. The PowerPoint 97 templates on OfficeUpdate are AutoContent templates and not Design templates.

Install Earlier Version Templates

On a computer that has PowerPoint 2000 installed, if your earlier version of PowerPoint is not on the computer and you want to install the templates from the earlier version or versions of PowerPoint, follow these steps:

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
2. Create a new folder for the templates as in the following example:
   1. In the left pane, click C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates.
   2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
   3. Name the new folder PPT97.
3. Insert the compact disc for the earlier version of PowerPoint.
4. On the Tools menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
5. Click the Name and Location tab.
6. In the Named box, type *.pot.
7. Click Browse, and then browse to select the PowerPoint compact disc.
8. Click Find Now.
9. After all of the templates are listed, on the Edit menu, click Select All.
10. Drag the selected templates to the new template folder that you created in step 2.

To Use Templates in PowerPoint

To use templates in PowerPoint, follow these steps:

1. Start PowerPoint.
2. On the File menu, click Open.
3. In the Files of type box, click Design Templates(*.pot).
4. In the Look in box, browse to the folder that you want, and then select the template that you want.
5. Click Open.
