FP2000: FrontPage Stops Responding During Preview Attempt (264804)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft FrontPage 2000, when you press the CTRL key and click a link in Normal view, you may receive the following error message:
This Program has Performed an Illegal Operation
The Details section of the message may include the following
FRONTPG caused an exception 10H in module FPEDITAX.DLL at ...
followed by a memory address and other information.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the .dll file identified in the error message is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the existing Fpeditax.dll file, and then reinstall it from the FrontPage 2000 compact disc.

Find and Rename Fpeditax.dll

To find and rename Fpeditax.dll, follow the steps appropriate to your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type Fpeditax.dll.
  3. In the Look In list, select Local Hard Drives, and then click Find Now.
  4. In the search results list, right-click FPEDITAX.DLL and select Rename. Change the extension on the file from from .DLL to .OLD.

Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Fpeditax.dll.
  3. In the Look In list, select Local Hard Drives, and then click Search Now.
  4. In the search results list, right-click FPEDITAX.DLL and select Rename. Change the extension on the file from from .DLL to .OLD.

Reinstall Fpeditax.dll

To reinstall Fpeditax.dll or other components of FrontPage, follow the steps appropriate to your situation.

FrontPage 2000 Purchased Alone

  1. Insert your FrontPage 2000 compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, (such as D:\), followed by setup.exe.
  3. Click OK to start installation in Maintenance Mode, which will reinstall FrontPage 2000.

FrontPage 2000 Purchased As Part of Microsoft Office 2000

  1. Insert your Office 2000 compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, (such as D:\), followed by setup.exe.
  3. Click OK to start installation in Maintenance Mode, and then click Repair Office.
When reinstallation is complete, restart your computer and verify that the issue has been resolved.
