FP2000: Can't Save Changes After Modifying a File (264760)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

This article was previously published under Q264760

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft FrontPage 2000, after you make changes to an HTML document, you may be unable to save the file, and you may receive the following error message:
Unable to write to file filename
where filename is the path of the file that you want to save.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you do not have write permissions for the file.

RESOLUTION

To assign write permissions to the file or files that you need to modify, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows NT Explorer, and then browse to the folder containing the file that you want to modify.
  2. Right-click the file, click Properties, click Security, and then click Permissions.
  3. Assign write access to each group that the modifying users belong to.
NOTE: Windows NT uses the lowest NTFS permission.

For example, if a user is member of groups named Admin and Webuser, and Admin has full permissions to the files, and Webuser is restricted to read-only, Windows NT restricts the user's access to read-only for files that are accessible to both groups.
