SUMMARY

There are several methods for installing Office 2000 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Each method results in a slightly different configuration. This article explains the different installation methods and when each method is most appropriate to use.

MORE INFORMATION

The following sections outline the different methods for installing Office 2000 on Windows NT 4.0.

Run Setup.exe as Administrator

If you log on as a member of the Administrators group, you can run the Setup.exe file on the root of the Office CD or on the root of an administrative installation. When the installation of Office is finished, any user on the computer can run the Office programs. This is because the Office program shortcuts are placed into the \Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs folder.

The following are sample steps for the installation of Office under this configuration:
  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Double-click Setup.exe on the root of the Office CD or the root of your Office administrative installation.
  3. At the end of the installation, click Yes if you are prompted to restart your computer.
  4. After your computer restarts, log on as the same user from step 1.
  5. Log off, and then log on as a member of the Users group. You can start any of the installed Office programs. Also, you can run Setup for Office and install additional features that were not originally installed by the administrator.
NOTE: If you want to install Office so that the Office programs are only available to you, follow the steps in the "Create a Per-user Installation by Using the ALLUSERS Property" section later in this article.

Use the /J Switch

If you use the /j switch when you run Setup for Office, the end result varies, depending on whether the Windows Desktop Update is installed.

If the Windows Desktop Update Is Installed

If you run Setup with a command line similar to the following:

path\Setup /jm

the shortcuts for the Office programs will be Windows Installer shortcuts, and they will be placed into the \Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs folder. This means that the Office programs will be available to any user who has an account on the computer. However, running Setup with the /j switch in this context installs all of the Office programs, so that they are in an Installed on First Use state. Therefore, when the Office program is run for the first time, it takes a few minutes to complete the installation.

The following are sample steps for the installation of Office under this configuration:
  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following, and then click OK:

    path\setup /jm

NOTE: path is the path to your Office source location. The Windows Installer runs for a minute or two and finishes without any notification. However, the Office program shortcuts are placed on the Programs menu in an Installed on First Use state.

  4. Log off and log back on as a member of the Users group.
  5. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click any one of the Office program shortcuts. The Windows Installer appears and installs the selected program. Any user who logs on to this computer can use this program without having the Windows Installer install it.

  6. Click Yes if you are prompted to restart your computer.
  7. Repeat step 5 for any other Office programs that you want to use.

If the Windows Desktop Update Is Not Installed

If you run Setup with a command line similar to the following:

path\Setup /jm

where path is the full path to your Office Setup files, no Office shortcuts will be installed. Office is installed in such a way that any user who has access to the Office Setup files can install Office, including users who are not members of the Administrators group.

The following are sample steps for the installation of Office under this configuration:
  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following:

    path\setup /jm

where path is the full path to your Office CD or administrative installation.

NOTE: This step takes only a few minutes.
  4. Log off and log back on as a member of the Users group.

NOTE: You must have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later installed for the following steps to work. For additional information about this issue, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

229457 OFF2000: Error Installing Office on Windows NT with Internet Explorer 2.0

  5. Click Start, and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following:

    path\setup /qb

where path is the full path to your Office CD or administrative installation.

NOTE: You must use /q, /qb, or /qn on the command line in this situation.
  7. Click Yes if you are prompted to restart your computer.
  8. After your computer restarts, log on as the same user from step 4. Office will now be installed for this user as well as any user who has an account on the computer.

Use the AlwaysInstallElevated System Policy

If you turn on the AlwaysInstallElevated system policy, a member of the Users group will be allowed to install any Windows Installer product, not just Office 2000. However, before a non-administrative user can install a Windows Installer product (with this policy turned on), a member of the Administrators group must first install the Windows Installer.

The following steps use a manual approach to turning on the AlwaysInstallElevated system policy. You can also turn on this policy by using the Office 2000 policy templates, which are available in the Office 2000 Resource Kit. For more information about these policy templates, please refer to the Office Resource Kit documentation at the following Microsoft Web site: The following are sample steps for the installation of Office under this configuration:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Double-click the Instmsiw.exe file in the \Msi folder on the root of the Office 2000 CD-ROM or your Office 2000 administrative installation. This installs the Windows Installer.

  3. Click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type Regedit and then click OK.
  5. Locate and select the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

  6. Set the AlwaysInstallElevated DWORD value to 1.
  7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  8. Log off and log on as the non-administrative user who will eventually run Setup for Office.
  9. Click Start, and then click Run.
  10. In the Open box, type Regedit and then click OK.
  11. Locate and select the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software

  12. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  13. With New Key #1 selected, type Policies and then press ENTER.
  14. With the Policies key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  15. With New Key #1 selected, type Microsoft and then press ENTER.

  17. With New Key #1 selected, type Windows and then press ENTER.
  18. With the Windows key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  19. With New Key #1 selected, type Installer and then press ENTER.
  20. With the Installer key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  21. With New Value #1 selected, type AlwaysInstallElevated and then press ENTER.
  22. With the AlwaysInstallElevated value selected, on the Edit menu, click Modify.
  23. In the Value data box, type 1 and then click OK.
  24. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  25. Click Start, and then click Run.
  26. In the Open box, type a command line similar to:

    path\setup /qb

where path is the complete path to the Office Setup files.

NOTE: You must use /q, /qb, or /qn on the command line in this situation. When the installation is finished, only this user can use the Office programs. If another user logs on to this computer, the user does not see the Office shortcuts on the Programs menu.

Create a Per-user Installation by Using the ALLUSERS Property

This type of installation installs Office in such a way that the Office programs are available only to the user who installed Office.

The following are sample steps for the installation of Office under this configuration:
  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following command line:

    path\Setup.exe ALLUSERS=""

where path is the path to the installation point.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Choose your Setup options in the Setup dialog boxes.
  6. Click Yes to the prompt to restart at the end of Setup.
  7. After the computer restarts, log on as the same user.
Office will be installed with the options that you selected. If you log off and log on as another user, you will not have access to the Office programs.

NOTE: If another member of the Administrators group follows the preceding steps after you already installed Office by using ALLUSERS="", that member will not be able to choose an installation folder different from the folder that you selected.
