SYMPTOMS

When you initiate directory synchronization between Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange Server, you receive an error message.

CAUSE

Lotus Notes enables users to have multiple e-mail addresses, each of which can have more than one word. When directory synchronization (dirsync) runs between Exchange Server and Notes, it imports this "short name" as one string. If the address has more than one word, the original words are separated by semicolons and concatenated to form one string. Because this concatenated user name does not exist, dirsync does not recognize the user name, and an error message occurs.

When you attempt to enter the user name in the Exchange Server side with several words, the alias is recognized, but the Notes name is modified (concatenated) during the next dirsync cycle.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Create a new user container for those names, but do not include this container in dirsync with Lotus Notes.
  2. Manually create custom recipients and point the multiple-word names to the Notes users.
Addresses in the new container are recognized custom recipients who can receive mail from Exchange users. The names are not changed during dirsync.

You can automate this process by exporting those names from Notes as .csv files, and then importing them to Exchange as custom recipients. To do this, click Directory import on the Tools menu.

To enable the first word of the "short name" to participate in dirsync, create an additional name in the Notes side with the first word only as the short name. This address is legitimate to Exchange and goes through dirsync as the Exchange alias.
