SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Standby mode while you are recording (capturing) video by using Movie Maker or VideoWave III from a digital video camera that is attached to the 1394 port, your monitor may become blank almost immediately. However, within several seconds, your monitor display may be restored.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Windows Millennium Edition (Me) turns off the display before all devices and programs are queried to determine if it is safe to enter Standby mode. After this occurs, a driver or program may determine that it is not safe to use Standby mode, so Windows Me does not use Standby mode, and turns the display on.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, do not try to use Standby mode when you are capturing video, or stop the video capture, and then use Standby mode.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
