AOL Setup Prompts for the Windows 98 CD-ROM Instead of the Windows Millennium Edition CD-ROM (264511)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install America Online (AOL) from the Online Services folder on the desktop after you upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you be prompted to insert the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM. However, when you do so, you may receive the following error message:
Please insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM into the drive selected below, then click OK. To select another drive, click on your choice in the list below.
If you then insert the Windows Me CD-ROM, you may receive the following error message:
We were unable to locate the Windows 98 installer on this CD-ROM. Please insert another CD-ROM into the drive selected or select another drive.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue:
  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Look in box, click Local Hard Drives, type aol40us.exe in the Search for files or folders named box, and then click Search Now.
  3. When the search finishes, right-click the Aol40us.exe file, click Rename, type Aol40us.old, and then press ENTER.
  4. Install AOL from the Online Services folder on the desktop. When you are prompted to insert your Windows CD-ROM, insert the Windows Me CD-ROM, and then click OK. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing AOL.
