FIX: Index Tuning Wizard Does Not Process Parameterized Workload Across Batches (264489)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 7.0

This article was previously published under Q264489
BUG #: 55030 (SQLBUG_70)

SYMPTOMS

The Index Tuning Wizard does not process a workload that has parameterized commands, which span batches. This includes commands generated by an ODBC driver or OLEDB provider, usually for cursor commands that use sp_cursor stored procedures. If the entire workload is within a batch, the wizard is able to process the commands and recommend proper indexes. The problem occurs only when the commands are split into multiple batches. If the commands are split into multiple batches, the wizard cannot process the commands resulting in no new index recommendations.

CAUSE

The parser could not process the parameterized data outside the scope of a batch. Although the wizard extracts information out of the system stored procedures for cursor calls and SQL statements, parameterized workloads are not parsed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
