SUMMARY

If an upgrade from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server does not work, you may want to roll the server back to Exchange Server 5.5 completely to try again. To roll a partially upgraded Exchange 2000 server back to Exchange Server 5.5, follow the procedure in the "More Information" section.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. First, manually remove Exchange completely from the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Remove all Exchange-related services and drivers from the registry. They are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services, and are:

      DAVEX
      ESE97
      ESE98
      EXIFS
      ExIPC
      EXOLEDB
      IMAP4Svc
      MSSEARCH
      POP3Svc
      RESvc
      Anything that starts with LME-
      Anything that starts with MSExchange
      Anything that starts with SERVERNAME-LME

NOTE: If you are using Exchange 2000 Server SP2 or later, you may not find the ESE97 and ESE98 registry keys. Instead, remove the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ESE

    2. Remove the Exchange Setup key from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange registry key. Remove the entire Setup key.
    3. Rename the Exchsrvr folders on all disks on the computer.
    4. Uninstall Microsoft Internet Information Services completely.
    5. Restart the server.
    6. Reinstall Internet Information Services.
    7. Reapply any Windows 2000 and service pack(s) (if applicable).
    8. Reapply the latest IIS roll-up hotfix(es).
  2. Delete the renamed Exchsrvr folders from the system.
  3. From the Exchange Server 5.5 CD-ROM, run setup /r. Choose the same installation choices that were on the original server. Choose to create a new site with the same organization and site names.
  4. When Setup finishes, run Performance Optimizer, and configure the file locations to the same places that the files were located in before.
  5. From the appropriate Exchange Server 5.5 service pack CD-ROM, run update /r.
  6. Install any post-service pack hotfixes that were previously on the server.
  7. Restore the directory and information store from a previous backup.
  8. Start the directory and information store services.
  9. Force intrasite directory replication.
  10. Use the Active Directory Connector Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to force replication on the Configuration Connection Agreement.
  11. Use the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program to change the alias name, admin display name, and e-mail addresses for the Site Replication Service to Directory Service, and in the e-mail address, change SRS to DSA.

Note If you click the server object in the Exchange Server 5.5 Administration program, the Directory Service leaf object is changed to the Site Replication Service object, depending on how far the upgrade progressed.
  12. Use the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program to change the Serial-Number attribute to "Version 5.5 (Build 2650.24: Service Pack 3)," or whatever it was before.
  13. Use the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program to navigate to the server-level Protocols container of the server that failed to upgrade. If there is no LDAP object, perform the following operation:
    1. On the File menu, click New Other, and then click Raw Object.
    2. Double-click Protocol-Cfg-LDAP-Server.
    3. Give the new object the following attributes:
      AttributeValue
      Admin-Display-NameLDAP (Directory) Settings
      Anonymous-Access1
      Association-Lifetime10
      Directory-NameLDAP
      Enabled-Authorization-Packages0§DPA
      0§DPASSL
      1§CLEARTEXT
      1§CLEARTEXTSSL
      1§NTLM
      1§NTLMSSL
      Enabled-Protocol-Cfg1
      LDAP-Search-Cfg1
      Object-Class2A864886F71401034D
      2A864886F71401034B
      2A864886F714010344
      550600
      Outgoing-Msg-Size-Limit100
Port-Number389 (or some other number if this server is a domain controller)
      Use-Site-Values1

  14. Restart the directory service on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer so that the LDAP addition takes effect.
  15. Use the Adsiedit tool from the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit to change the serialNumber attribute on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer that failed to upgrade to "Version 5.5 (Build 2650.24: Service Pack 3)," or whatever the serial number of the Exchange Server 5.5 computer is, and change the versionNumber to 2650, or whatever major revision the Exchange Server 5.5 computer is.
  16. Force intrasite directory replication in the Exchange Server 5.5 site, and use the Active Directory Connector Management MMC snap-in to force replication on the Configuration Connection Agreement.
