SYMPTOMS

In Visio 2000, when you insert a drawing into Microsoft Word and edit it several times, your computer's performance slows down.

CAUSE

When you insert a drawing into Microsoft Word and edit it several times, "memory leaks" occur. These memory leaks reduce the available resources, and slow down performance.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Visio 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To temporarily work around this problem, periodically save your work, quit, and then restart Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.  This problem was corrected in Microsoft Visio 2000 SR-1.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Object.
  3. In the Object box, click Microsoft Visio Drawing to insert a Visio 2000 drawing object.
  4. Drag some shapes onto the drawing.
  5. Deactivate the page by clicking off of the Visio drawing.
  6. Right-click the drawing, point to Visio Object, and then click Open.
  7. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
  8. Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Task Manager to open Windows Task Manager.
  9. Click the Performance tab.

    Note that the CPU and memory usage are very high.
