Error Message: Unable to Synchronize the Environment Variables in the Windows Registry... (264214)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q264214 SYMPTOMS
When you start the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to synchronize the environment variables in the Windows Registry with the environment variables in the legacy files Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur for either of the following two reasons:
- A trailing space follows a statement in the Autoexec.bat file.
-or- - The Config.sys file contains a [MENU] entry for a multiple configuration.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use the appropriate method.
Method 1: Trailing Spaces in the Autoexec.bat File
Use the System Configuration Utility tool (Msconfig.exe) to remove any trailing space characters from the Autoexec.bat file. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Accessories.
- Select System Tools, and then click System Information.
- On Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.
- On Environment tab, select TEMP variable, and then click Edit.
- In Variable Value box, remove the trailing space character from the text string.
- Click OK, click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer.
Method 2: Multi-configuration Entry
Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to remove the multiple configuration entries.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
If the Autoexec.bat file contains a trailing space in the SET TEMP= statement, you can also see a line of X's in the environment when you run the SET command at an MS-DOS prompt.
