XL97: Some Extended Characters Mapped Incorrectly on Windows 95/98 (264184)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97 SR-2 and subsequent update releases, when you use extended characters for some fonts, such as Wingdings and Webdings, the characters appear differently from what you see in the Character Map tool in Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98.

CAUSE

Excel 97 SR-2 does not handle some Unicode mapping correctly in Windows 95/ 98.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.  This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use either of the following methods to access extended characters:
  • Hold down the ALT key and type the four digit code of the extended character on the numeric keypad.

    -or-

  • Use the Character Map tool in Windows. For more information about installing and using Character Map, refer to the Windows 95/98 documentation.
