SUMMARY

When you delete a _Restore folder that is not on the Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition system partition, you can cause System Restore to reset the data store. This removes all previous restore points and associated log files.

MORE INFORMATION

System Restore monitors all logical drives that are not marked as removable and that Microsoft Windows can read and write to. System Restore uses the _Restore folders on partitions other than Windows Me for drive-letter indexing. When Windows Me starts, the System Restore feature looks at all the _Restore folders to verify that the information within each folder is accurate with the drive that each folder resides on.

Within each _Restore folder not on the Windows Me system drive is a single file named Srdiskid.dat. This is a 1-byte file that contains only the drive letter for the logical drive of the created file. If you add or remove a physical or logical drive, the drive letter assignment may change. When this occurs, System Restore detects this change, purges the data store, and then rebuilds it.
