SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install or start any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Reference\Microsoft Encarta\Encarta Interactive World Atlas 2000\Msworld5.exe
Abnormal Program Termination

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • Mismatched or outdated system files are installed on the computer.

  • The CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive cannot read the program CD-ROM correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods.

After you complete each method, test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Download and Install the Windows Libraries Update:

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Next to Search using, click Keyword Search.
  3. In the Keywords box, type libraries update.
  4. In the Operating System box, click the appropriate operating system, and then click Find It.
  5. In the list of found files, click the link that you want, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install the Microsoft Libraries Update.
