When you make any changes to a recurring meeting, the standard recurring meeting icon (two arrows that form a circle) changes to have a diagonal line through it.

When you change the original format of that one meeting occurrence, the line to appears through the standard recurring icon. This causes the item (or occurrence) to be different from all of the other instances of the recurring meeting, but other instances of the meeting are not affected by this modification and their icons remain the same.
