Access Violation Viewing Brother Printer Properties in German Windows 2000 (263995)

SYMPTOMS

In German Windows 2000, if you have a Brother HL-730 or HL-820 printer driver installed, an access violation occurs when you attempt to view the printer's properties. The German error message is:

Funktionsadresse 0x77fc9ba2 hat eine Schutzverletzung verursacht. (Ausnahmecode 0xc0000005) Die Eigenschaftsseiten werden moeglicherweise nicht angezeigt.)

Windows 2000 eventually recovers from this problem and displays the printer properties, but the Device Settings tab is missing.

CAUSE

The German string for the Change Setting button for the sleep time ("Anderungseinstellungen") is too long for the defined buffer, which causes heap corruption and eventually produces an access violation.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
