Internal Stack Overflow When Quitting to MS-DOS (263891)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q263891

SYMPTOMS

When you click Restart in MS-DOS mode in the Shut Down Windows dialog box, your computer may stop responding (hang) with the following error message:
An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted.
Change the STACKS setting in your Config.sys file, and then try again.
Note that this problem occurs only in Windows 98 Second Edition Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) mode.

CAUSE

If an ACPI hardware interrupt occurs just before ACPI mode is disabled during the shutdown process, Acpi.sys sets an ACPI interrupt register incorrectly. In MS-DOS mode, the incorrect hardware interrupt occurs continuously.
