PRB: SQL Server 7.0 Failover Cluster Wizard Fails to Remove Resources After Removing the Virtual Server (263864)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server, Enterprise Edition 7.0

This article was previously published under Q263864

SYMPTOMS

When you use the SQL Failover Wizard to remove a SQL Virtual Server, the Wizard may leave behind the SQL IP address, network name, and generic service resources for that virtual SQL Server, even though the Wizard seems to complete successfully.

CAUSE

This can occur when the dependencies have been changed from their default values. The most common reason for the change is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

223786 PRB: Cluster Group Containing SQL Server and MS DTC Moves Slowly

WORKAROUND

Manually delete the resources that are left behind by the SQL Failover Wizard.

MORE INFORMATION

As a side effect, you may see this problem as an IP conflict when attempting to recluster the SQL Server with the same IP address. You will receive an error indicating that the IP address is already in use.
