SYMPTOMS

The AutoDiscovery and Layout solution may fail to detect a running Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) if you do not have administrator permissions.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Visio 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.  This problem was corrected in Microsoft Visio 2000 SR-1.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Make sure the MSDE is running and set to Autostart.
  2. Log in as a user who is not the administrator, or a user who does not have administrative permissions on the computer.
  3. Start the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution. Note that the Start MSDE box appears.
  4. Click OK. Note that the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution quits.
