Error with the Aspienum.vxd File During Windows Me Setup (263809)

After the second automated reboot for a Windows Millennium Edition (Me) upgrade, you may receive the following error message:
A device file that is specified in the System.INI file is damaged. It may be needed to run Windows. You may need to run the Window Setup program again. If the file is included in another software package, you may need to reinstall the software that uses the file. C:\WINDOWS\system\ASPIENUM.VXD Press any key to continue.
After you press one or more keys multiple times, your computer may stop responding, and Setup stops.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the Aspienum.vxd device driver file is present on your computer before the upgrade.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue:
- Restart your computer. As the computer is starting, press and hold either the CTRL or F8 key.
- On the Startup menu, choose Safe Mode.
- After your computer starts, click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.
- Click the Static VxDs tab, and then click to clear the Aspienum.vxd check box.
- Click OK, and then click Yes to restart the computer. Setup should then continue from where it previously stopped.
