SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer automatic configuration may not work if access to the configuration script requires authentication. This issue occurs under any of the following conditions :
  • The configuration script is located in a Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) virtual folder with authentication set to Basic.
  • The configuration script is located in an IIS virtual folder with authentication set to NTLM or Negotiate, and Internet Explorer user is not logged on with an account that is defined in the IIS server domain.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
