XIMS: MCIS NNTP Service Does Not Allow Spaces in User Name for the AUTHINFO USER Command (263713)

SYMPTOMS

Users who have a space in their user name are unable to log on to the NNTP service.

CAUSE

The NNTP service incorrectly assumes that the space marks the end of the user name in the AUTHINFO USER command. As a result, the NNTP service is not using the correct account during the authentication process.

WORKAROUND

One workaround is to avoid using user names with spaces.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release that contains this hotfix.
