This article contains information about how to add ScreenTip comments (mouse-over-text) to shapes. It shows you how to do this through the user interface and by using the ShapeSheet.

To display the ShapeSheet of a shape, select the shape, and then click Show ShapeSheet on the Window menu. You can also enable developer mode to have right-click access to the Show ShapeSheet command. To have right-click access to the Show ShapeSheet command, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Advanced tab.
  2. Click to select the Run in developer mode check box.
  3. Click OK.
Right-click any shape, and note that the shortcut menu now contains the Show ShapeSheet command.

Use one of the following methods to add ScreenTip comments to a shape in your drawing.

Method 1: Use Insert Comment to Add Comment Text

This method uses the Visio user interface to add comment text to a shape's ShapeSheet.

  1. Select the shape that you want.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Comment (or Edit Comment).
  3. In the Comment dialog box, type the text, and then click OK.

Method 2: Add Comment Text Directly to the ShapeSheet

  1. Select the shape that you want.
  2. On the Window menu, click Show Shapesheet.
  3. Scroll down to the Miscellaneous section in the ShapeSheet.
  4. Select the Comment field.
  5. Type text in between the quotation marks ("") within the formula bar.
  6. Press ENTER.
  7. Close the ShapeSheet.
To enable Comment ScreenTips in yellow and set Visio to display comments in ScreenTips for the drawing window, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab.
  2. In the Enable ScreenTips section, click to select the check box next to Drawing Window.
  3. Click OK.
To see a shape's comment text, rest the mouse pointer on the shape and the text should appear just below the mouse pointer.

NOTE: If the shape contains a hyperlink, when you rest the mouse pointer on the shape, the hyperlink appears instead of the shape comment.
