You cannot add or edit records when you link a replicated Access 97 database in Access 2002 (263101)

SYMPTOMS

In Access 2002, you can link a replicated Access 97 database and view the data. If you try to add or edit a record, however, you receive the following error message:
Operation not supported on replicable databases that have not been converted to the current version.

RESOLUTION

To add or edit records, you must convert the replica set to the current version.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

CAUTION: If you follow the steps in this example, you modify the sample database Northwind.mdb. You may want to back up the Northwind.mdb file and follow these steps on a copy of the database.

  1. Use Access 97 to open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Replication, and then click Create Replica.
  3. After the replica is created, quit Access 97.
  4. Open Access 2002.
  5. In the Task Pane, click Blank Database under New.
  6. In the File New Database dialog box, type TestLink in the File name box, and then click Create.
  7. On the File menu, point to Get External Data, and then click Link Tables.
  8. In the Link dialog box, locate the replicated database that you created in step 2, and then click Link.
  9. Click the Employees table, and then click OK.
  10. Open the Employees table, and then try to edit data.

    Note that you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
