PRB: SQL Server 2000 Install May Fail Due to 'mfc42u.dll' (263076)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install SQL Server 2000, you may get the following messages:
Read Only File Detected
A read only file, c:winnt\system32\mfc42u.dll, was found while attempting to copy files to the destination location. To overwrite the file, click the Yes button, otherwise click the No button.

Don't display this message again

[YES] [NO] [CANCEL]

-and-

Setup
The specified file cannot be opened as write.
Ensure the file is not in use and restart setup.
File: C:\WINNT\System32\mfc42u.dll

[OK]
If you receive and dismiss these error messages, SQL Setup may complete. However, there are no shortcuts added to the Start menu, under Programs.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you are installing SQL Server 2000 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Servers after the installation of Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0.

WORKAROUND

To resolve this problem, uninstall SQL Server 2000. Locate and rename the file "mfc42u.dll" to "mfc42u.original" prior to attempting a re-installation. Then, you need to re-install SQL Server 2000.
