"Fixed Font Alignment in Japanese Windows 2000" Update Causes "Access Violation" Error Message During Program Setup (262957)

SYMPTOMS

After you apply the initial release of the "Fixed Font Alignment in Japanese Windows 2000" Windows 2000 Critical Update as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, a program's Setup program (for example, Microsoft Office 2000 Setup or Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 Setup) may cause an "access violation" error message and the installation stops:

CAUSE

The updated version of the User32.dll file that is included with the "Fixed Font Alignment in Japanese Windows 2000" update causes a double heap in an allocated user area memory.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this fix.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

WORKAROUND

You can work around this problem by using one of the following methods:

Method 1

Change the path when you run the Setup program:
  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. Change the current path to drive C.
  3. Run the Setup program with the full path

    c:\>e:\setup.exe

    where e:\ is the CD-ROM drive.

Method 2

Uninstall the hotfix for Q254049 and run the Setup program:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Change or Remove Programs, click Windows 2000 Hotfix (Pre-Sp1), and then click Change/Remove (for more information about the hotfix, refer to Q254049).
  3. Restart Windows 2000, and then run the Setup program that caused the "access violation" error message.
  4. After you finish installing the program, reapply the "Fixed Font Alignment in Japanese Windows 2000" update.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
