OL2000: "Can't Register Dao360.dll" Error Message When You Upgrade to Microsoft Office SR-1 (262928)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to update Microsoft Office 2000 with Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) on computers with Office 2000 already installed from the original share point location for Outlook 2000 (stand-alone) installation files, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Error message 1904

-or-

Can't register DAO360.DLL

-or-

HRESULT error 107374152

CAUSE

There are entries in the registry that prevent Outlook 2000 from installing SR-1 correctly to an existing installation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must edit the Registry:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and click the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OfficeCustomizationWizard

  4. Right-click the OfficeCustomizationWizard key, and then click Delete.
  5. Locate and click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer

  6. Click the Installer folder in the left pane, right-click the InProgress key in the left pane, and then click Delete.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can also uninstall Outlook 2000 and then reinstall it from the revised share point.

To uninstall Outlook:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Outlook 2000, and then click Remove.
