CG4: Error Message Is Displayed When You Attempt to Insert a Clip That Is No Longer Available (262866)

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Use Clip Gallery to Remove Old Clips

If there are only a few images that have the problem described in the "Symptoms" section, use one of the following steps:

• Click Remove Preview and Clip Gallery simply removes the preview image from the Artgal40.cag file.
• Click Update All and the Update dialog box appears, displaying the following message:

  Click Update All to correct previews for previews for clip files that have been deleted, moved, or changed. To add previews of other clip files to the Clip Gallery, click Cancel, and then click Import Clips.

  If you click Update All, follow the instructions provided by the dialog boxes to locate the missing images. If you do not click to select the check box for either Network drives or Removable disks, Clip Gallery does not check for clip files in either location.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 2: Rename Artgal40.cag

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. In the Named box, type Artgal40.cag, and then click Find Now.
2. Right-click Artgal40.cag, click Rename on the shortcut menu, and then rename the file Artgal40.old.
3. Restart Clip Gallery.

Clip Gallery re-creates the Artgal40.cag file when it restarts. If you have clips that were manually added to Clip Gallery, and they haven't been moved, you can re-import them at this time. See the "Steps to Import Clips" section for further information.

Method 3: Delete the Legacy Clip Catalogs (*.cag) Files

Determine the path for the legacy *.cag file that contains the clip images. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft WordPad.
2. On the Insert menu, click Object.
3. Click Microsoft Clip Gallery in the Object Type list.
4. Select a preview from the legacy catalog, and then click Clip Properties.
   
   The Clip Properties dialog box appears. It contains the path to the *.cag file.
5. Note the path, and then click Cancel.
   
   Quit Clip Gallery before proceeding to the next step.
6. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
7. Open the folder that contains the *.cag file that you want to delete.
8. Select the *.cag file, whose name you noted, and then from the File menu, click Delete.
   
   If you are prompted to confirm the deletion of the file, click OK.

Repeat these steps for each legacy *.cag file on your computer.

Steps to Import Clips

1. Start WordPad.
2. On the Insert menu, click Object.
3. Click Microsoft Clip Gallery in the Object Type list, and then click OK.
4. After Clip Gallery is open, click the Import Clips button.
5. Go to the folder that contains the clip files that you want to add, press CTRL, and then select each file that you want to import.
   
   You can use Universal Naming Convention (UNC) names to connect to a network server. You can work in small batches to save your temporary file space and to categorize files into specific groups during the import process. Select approximately 100 to 150 files at a time.
6. After selecting the clips, click Open.
   
   This brings up a preview of the first clip.
7. If you are adding numerous files, you can choose general categories for the pictures -- one or two at most. Now is the time to create a new category for the pictures that you're importing. If you want to create a new category, click New Category, and then type the name.
8. To import a batch, click to select the Add all clips to the selected categories check box.
   
   This selection directs Clip Gallery to import all the selected files one after another without prompting you for input. If you choose not to import as a batch, you must select and categorize each clip individually.
9. If you have more clips to import, repeat steps 4 through 8 as needed. Otherwise, quit Clip Gallery and WordPad.
