SYMPTOMS

The description of the disk compression tools during Setup and in the Add/Remove Programs tool is misleading. The description currently states: "Utilities that will allow you to install compression after Windows is installed."

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Drive Compression feature is unavailable in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me); however, there are compression tools which are available in Windows Me that can help you to maintain an existing compressed drive. The support for compressed drives in Windows Me is limited to the following tasks:

  • Mounting a compressed volume file (CVF)
  • Unmounting a CVF
  • Deleting a compressed drive
  • Reallocating free space on a compressed drive or its host
  • Using a compressed floppy disk or other removable media
