SUMMARY

When you import an animated Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) file into Windows Movie Maker, the file is played for five seconds by default. Clicking Play loops the first five seconds of the animation.

MORE INFORMATION

If the play duration is set to a lower value than the length set in the file, you may not see the full animation. To avoid this behavior, set the play duration to be longer than the play length of the animated GIF file, and trim the actual play length by adjusting the timeline.

Adjusting the Timeline for an Animated GIF File

  1. In Windows Movie Maker, click the file.
  2. On the Clip menu, click Add to Storyboard/Timeline.
  3. On the View menu, click Timeline.
  4. Drag the Timeline slider to the correct play length for the file.
  5. On the Clip menu, click Set End Trim Point. You can use the keyboard to do this by pressing CTRL+SHIFT and RIGHT ARROW.
This trims the GIF file to the correct length.

Changing the Default Play Length

  1. On the View menu, click Options.
  2. The Default imported photo duration setting is listed under the General section. Click the arrows to increase or decrease the play duration.
  3. Click OK.
