SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Remote Installation service (RIS) to install an image of Windows 2000 Professional that you created with Riprep.exe on a new client computer, you may receive either of the following error messages:
The BINL service cannot locate a flat image with a version that matches the version of the Riprep image.

An error occurred on the server. Please notify your administrator.

Missing CD Image

The server to which you chose to replicate this system does not contain a CD-based image. The version of the CD-based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to copy. Select a different server or add a CD-based image to this server.
You may also receive these error messages when you run Riprep.exe to create a new image on the server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Boot Information Negotiation Layer service (BINLSVC) cannot find an image on the RIS server that has the same version of the Ntoskrnl.exe file as the version in the image. RIS requires that you maintain a CD-ROM-based image (an image that you set up by using Risetup.exe) for each version of the Riprep images that you maintain on the server. For example, if you plan to have Riprep images of U.S. English, Spanish, and French versions of Windows 2000 Professional, you must maintain a CD-ROM-based image of each of these versions on the RIS server.

If you change the locale of a Version of Windows 2000, you will also receive this message even though you have a matching flat image on the server. For example, you may have an English version of Windows 2000 and then change the locale to be French Canadian. When you run Riprep on the system to copy the image to the RIS server, you will receive the preceding error message. In order to create the Riprep image you must change the locale back to English then use the [RegionalSettings] section in the Riprep.sif file to set the desired locale. This behavior may also occur in the following circumstances:
  • You try to run Riprep.exe on a computer that has a Windows 2000 Service Pack installed, but the RIS server does not contain a flat image with the same Service pack integrated or slip streamed. For additional information about adding an integrated image to the RIS server, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • You try to run Riprep.exe on a computer that has a hotfix that updates Ntoskrnl.exe.
  • You restored your RIS images from backup to a new RIS Server before you install RIS.For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

This is required by the process by which the Riprep image is downloaded to the new client. When you select the image by using the Client Installation Wizard (CIW), a flat image is required to boot the computer that is being installed so that it can copy the image to its local hard disk. RIS must find a CD-ROM-based image that matches the Riprep image that you selected to continue.
