SYMPTOMS

When you install Symantec Norton Internet Security 2000, you may receive the following error message:
CDSTART.EXE: This program does not run correctly on this version of Windows. To continue, click Run Program. To exit, click Cancel. For more information Click Details
If you click Details, you receive the following message:

Norton Internet Security 2000 version 1.0 was designed to run on Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition. It is strongly recommended that you do not install this application on Windows Millennium Edition.

If you click Run Program or if you restart your computer when you are prompted to do so at the end of the setup procedure, you receive the following error message:
Windows Protection Error. You need to restart you computer. System halted.

CAUSE

Norton Internet Security 2000 is not compatible with Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior:
  1. Press the power button on your computer to turn on your computer.
  2. Immediately press and hold CTRL.
  3. When you view the Microsoft Windows Millennium Startup Menu, release the CTRL key, select option number 3 (Safe Mode) with the keyboard arrows keys, and then press ENTER.
  4. After Windows starts, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  5. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  6. Click Norton Internet Security 2000, and then click Add/Remove.
  7. Follow the prompts to complete the uninstallation procedure.
