SUMMARY

This article describes the routing service port that is used by Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

Exchange 2000 uses a Link State Algorithm (LSA) routing protocol to propagate routing information throughout the organization. When you change the routing table, this information is immediately sent to all servers in the organization. In a routing group, each server, including the master, listens on TCP/IP port 691 for routing information updates (this port is registered with Internet Assigned Numbers Authority [IANA]). The routing group master broadcasts "changes only" to all servers in its routing group.

When routing information is transferred between routing groups, the information is transferred through the transport protocol that is used (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol [SMTP], X.400). For SMTP, this information transfer is accomplished by using a version of the LSA protocol that works as an extension to SMTP through the Extended Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (ESMTP) framework. In particular, the command verb is X-LINK2STATE.
