Windows 2000 Professional Upgrade Can Cause Disk Fragmentation (262627)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Professional, the Disk Defragmenter tool may report that the hard disk is fragmented and should be defragmented. This behavior can occur even if you defragmented the drive before you upgraded to Window 2000 Professional.

CAUSE

During the upgrade process, many files are copied, deleted, and replaced. This can cause the drive to become defragmented.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Disk Defragmenter tool to defragment the drive. To do this:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Click the disk that you want to defragment, and then click Defragment on the Action menu.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
