How to Change Hover Text for a Program Shortcut (262535)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q262535

SUMMARY

In Windows Millennium Edition (Me), shortcuts on the Program menu display a text description when you pause (or "hover") your mouse pointer over the shortcut. Newly created shortcuts display the file location by default. This article describes how to change the default content of the note displayed for a given shortcut.

MORE INFORMATION

For program file shortcuts, content for the text description is defined in the Comment field (new in Windows Me) for the shortcut. If the Comment field is blank, the text description is taken from the Target field for the shortcut.

To modify the text description, use the following steps:
  1. Right-click the shortcut, and then click Properties.
  2. Modify the content of the Comment field, and then click OK or Apply to save the changes.
NOTE: For Internet shortcuts the text description is defined in the URL field for the shortcut. Although you can modify the name for an Internet shortcut, the text description always corresponds to the specified Internet URL.
