XADM: Default Folders Created in Different Language by ExMerge (262425)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q262425 SYMPTOMS
After you run the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge program (ExMerge.exe) against new mailboxes, the default folder names in mailboxes may be displayed in a different language.
CAUSE
This issue can occur because the ExMerge program version 3.71 and earlier logs on to mailboxes by using the language of the locally installed MAPI components (the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program, Microsoft Outlook, or Microsoft Exchange Client).
Therefore, if you run ExMerge on a computer on which the English-language version of the Exchange Server Administrator program is installed and ExMerge is the first "client" to log on to a mailbox, the default folders in the mailbox are created in English. RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use ExMerge 2000, which is available with Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and provides improved support for different language mailboxes.
In ExMerge 2000 and later, you can specify a default locale. ExMerge 2000 uses this locale when it logs on to a mailbox that has never been accessed. This locale controls the language of the default folders in the newly initialized mailbox. When ExMerge logs on to a newly created mailbox, the default folders are created by using the locale with which the ExMerge program logged on. Because you can control the locale that the ExMerge program uses to log on to new mailboxes, you can control the language in which the default folders in the mailbox are created.
NOTE: If you want to import data to a server that different language clients need access to, you need to run the ExMerge program several times, and each time specify a different default locale and only select the users who work in that language.
For example, if you want to import data to mailboxes that German-language clients and Japanese-language clients need access to, run the ExMerge program once. Only select the German-language mailboxes and select the default locale as German. Then run the ExMerge program again. Select only the Japanese-language mailboxes and set the default locale as Japanese.
