Proxy Stops Listening for Server Proxy If AcceptEx() Does Not Succeed with Error Code 64 (262373)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0

This article was previously published under Q262373

SYMPTOMS

Proxy Server may unexpectedly stop listening on a port when it is performing a server proxy. For example, if it is performing a server proxy for Microsoft Exchange Server, the Proxy server may stop listening on port 25 or 110.

CAUSE

Some new network error codes have been added in Microsoft Windows 2000 to support Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Error code 64 (ERROR_NETNAME_DELETED) can occur if a client connects and then performs a disconnect (a three-way handshake, and then a reset from the client). The WinSock call to AcceptEx does not succeed because of this error code. When this occurs with Proxy Server, it terminates the session and calls the WinSock closesocket function. If Proxy Server is running on Windows 2000 and this behavior occurs, Proxy Server does not perform another WinSock AcceptEx call, causing it to stop listening on that port.

This behavior can also occur in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, but error codes other than error code 64 are generated.
