Cannot Log on Locally After You Modify Group Membership (262082)

If you modify a user's group membership, the user may not be able to log on locally.
CAUSE
This issue can occur because in Windows 2000 Professional, administrators can use the Users and Passwords tool in Control Panel to configure group membership. If you are an administrator, if you click a local user account, click Properties, and then click the Group Membership tab, the following options are displayed:
- Standard user
- Restricted User
- Other (with a list of all Local groups)
If you click Other, and then click a local group,
all other group memberships for this user are deleted. If you add the user to a local group by using this dialog box, all other group memberships are lost. The user may not be able to log on to the computer if the group that the user is now a member of does not have the right to log on locally to the workstation.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the Computer Management tool to add users to groups such as the Users or Power Users groups.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
