SUMMARY

Creating footnotes or endnotes in a master document is similar to creating footnotes or endnotes in a normal Microsoft Word document. This article describes how to create footnotes or endnotes in a master document.

MORE INFORMATION

You can create footnotes or endnotes by editing the master document or the individual subdocument. If you modify the individual subdocument, then when you bring the subdocument into the master document, Word updates the footnote reference numbers to reflect the correct number within the master document.

To insert a footnote or endnote in a master document (or one of the subdocuments), follow these steps:
  1. On the View menu, click Outline.
  2. If you don't see the text of the subdocuments, expand them. To do this, click the Expand Subdocuments button on the Outlining toolbar. If you only see the headings of the subdocuments and not the body text, click the Show All Headings button on the Outlining toolbar.
  3. Click where you want to insert the note reference mark.
  4. On the Insert menu, click Footnote.

Word changes the view to normal view.
  5. Under Insert, click either Footnote or Endnote.

NOTE: By default, Word places footnotes at the end of each page, and endnotes at the end of the document. You can change the placement of footnotes so that they appear directly below the text. Similarly, you can change the placement of endnotes so that they appear at the end of each section. To make this selection, click Options in the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
  6. Under Numbering, select the numbering format that you want to use. Or, click Symbol and select the symbol that you want to mark your footnote or endnote with, and then click OK.
  7. Click Options. Click the appropriate tab; select Continuous and any other options that you want. Click OK.

Word inserts the note number and places the insertion point next to the note number.

NOTE: If you want to restart numbering in each subdocument, click Restart Each Section.
  8. Type the note text.
You can also insert footnotes or endnotes in a subdocument, by opening the subdocument outside of the master document and making your changes. When you open the master document and expand the subdocuments, you see that Word has updated the footnote or endnote reference numbers to reflect the correct numbering within the entire master document.

If you insert a new document containing footnotes or endnotes as a subdocument in your master document, Word automatically updates the footnote or endnote reference numbers to reflect the correct numbering within the entire master document.
